Amleto Giovanni Cicognani
Amleto Giovanni Cardinal Cicognani (born February 24, 1883 in Brisighella , Province of Ravenna , Italy ; † December 17, 1973 in Vatican City ) was Cardinal Secretary of State and Cardinal Dean of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Cicognani studied at the seminary to Faenza and received on 23 September 1905 by the Bishop of Faenza , Gioachino Cantagalli , the ordination . He continued his studies in Rome until 1910 , where he received his doctorate in Catholic theology , philosophy and canon law .
From May 10, 1910, he worked as an official at the Congregation for the Order of the Sacraments , and on March 28, 1917, he became the Pope's secret chamberlain , who on May 19, 1923 appointed him papal house prelate . From 1921 to 1932 he was also a lecturer at the University of Sant'Apollinare, on December 16, 1922, he was also adjunct of the Consistorial Congregation and on February 16, 1928 assessor at the Congregation for the Eastern Churches .
Already entrusted with various foreign missions since 1924, he was on March 17, 1933 by Pope Pius XI. the apostolic delegate in the United States and Titular Archbishop of in Phrygia Laodicea appointed and received on 23 April 1933 the Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops , Cardinal Raffaele Carlo Rossi OCD , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the secretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, Giuseppe Pizzardo , and the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Archbishop Carlo Salotti . Pope John XXIII took him on December 15, 1958 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Clemente in the college of cardinals . Cicognani was the second member of his family to receive the cardinal purple. His brother Gaetano Cicognani had become cardinal five years earlier. He followed this on May 23, 1962 as Cardinal Bishop of Frascati .
From November 14, 1959 he was secretary of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches and was appointed by Pope John XXIII. on August 12, 1961 appointed Cardinal Secretary of State and by Pope Paul VI. confirmed in office two days after his election as Pope in 1963. Amleto Giovanni Cigognani died on December 17, 1973 in Vatican City and was buried in the Church of San Clemente in Rome.
