Gaetano Cardinal Cicognani (born November 26, 1881 in Brisighella , Province of Ravenna , Italy , † February 5, 1962 in Rome ) was a diplomat of the Holy See and later Curial Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After his ordination on September 24, 1904, Cicognani studied Catholic theology , philosophy , law and canon law in Rome . In 1910 he received his doctorate in these subjects and was then a notary at the Roman Rota . In 1915 he joined the State Secretariat, where he worked in The Hague , Belgium and Spain .

Pope Pius XI appointed him on January 11, 1925 titular Archbishop of Ancyra and Apostolic Nuncio in Bolivia . He received the episcopal ordination on February 1, 1925 by the then Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri , co- consecrators were Rafaello Carlo Rossi , Assessor of the Consistorial Congregation , and Giovanni Maria Zonghi , President of the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy .

From June 15, 1928, Cicognani was nuncio in Peru and since June 13, 1935 in Austria . After Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 12, 1938, the Pope asked him on March 30 to leave the country. Cicognani complied with the request and left Austria on April 5th. On May 16, he became nuncio in Spain, which was marked by civil war .

On January 12, 1953, Pius XII. him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Cecilia in the college of cardinals . In the same year he returned to Rome and became Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Rites on December 7th and Pro-Prefect of the Apostolic Signature on November 18, 1954 a year later . He held this office until November 14, 1959, and was Prefect of the Congregation for Rites until his death in 1962.

John XXIII appointed him on December 14, 1959 Cardinal Bishop of Frascati .

His brother Amleto Giovanni Cicognani (1883–1973), who was two years his junior , had been Cardinal Secretary of State since 1961 .
