Egidio Cardinal Vagnozzi (born February 2, 1906 in Rome , Italy , † December 26, 1980 ibid) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Egidio Vagnozzi studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Rome . He received on 22 December 1928, the sacrament of Holy Orders and entered after further studies in 1930 in the service of the Vatican Secretariat of State . From 1932 to 1942 he was a member of the staff of the Apostolic Delegation in the USA , from 1942 to 1945 he was an advisor to the Apostolic Nunciature in Portugal , and from 1945 to 1947 he performed the same task in France . In 1947 and 1948 he was a member of the staff of the Pontifical Delegation in preparation for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Vatican and India .

In 1949 he was appointed by Pope Pius XII. the titular Archbishop of Myra and apostolic envoy to the Philippines . He was ordained bishop on May 22, 1949 in Rome by Cardinal Adeodato Giovanni Piazza OCD ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Francesco Borgongini Duca , Apostolic Nuncio in Italy, and Archbishop Roberto Ronca , Prelate of Pompei . In 1951 he became apostolic nuncio in the Philippines. Pope John XXIII appointed Egidio Vagnozzi in 1958 as Apostolic envoy in the USA. From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council .

Pope Paul VI accepted him in 1967 as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Giuseppe al Trionfale in the college of cardinals and one year later made him prefect of the administration of property of the Apostolic See . In 1973 he was raised to cardinal priest pro hac vice while retaining his titular church .

Egidio Vagnozzi died on December 26, 1980 in Rome and was initially buried in the Campo di Verano cemetery. In 1983 his bones were transferred to his titeldiakonie San Giuseppe in via Trionfale .
