Giuseppe Caprio
Giuseppe Cardinal Caprio (born November 15, 1914 in Lapio , Avellino Province , Italy , † October 15, 2005 in Rome ) was a Vatican diplomat and later Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He was Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
Life
Giuseppe Caprio studied in Rome the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology and received on 17 December 1938, the sacrament of Holy Orders . After further studies, he worked in the State Secretariat of the Vatican from 1940 to 1947 . On May 27, 1947, Pope Pius XII awarded him . the honorary title of Surplus Secret Chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) and on November 21, 1955 the title of House Prelate of His Holiness .
From 1947 to 1951 he was secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in China , where the communist regime placed him under arrest for three months and finally expelled him. From 1951 to 1954 he worked for the Nunciature in Belgium , from 1954 to 1959 he was Apostolic Visitator and head of the Apostolic Delegation in South Vietnam . From 1959 to 1961 he did diplomatic work in Taiwan .
On October 14, 1961, Pope John XXIII appointed him . the titular Archbishop of Apollonia . He was ordained bishop on December 17, 1961 by the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Grégoire-Pierre Agagianian ; Co -consecrators were Raffaele Calabria , Coadjutor Archbishop of Benevento , and Archbishop Pietro Parente .
Giuseppe Caprio attended the Second Vatican Council and became Pro-Nuncio in India in 1967 . From 1969 he took on various management tasks in the administration of the Vatican.
On June 30, 1979 Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titeldiakonie Santa Maria Ausiliatrice in via Tuscolana in the cardinals college and appointed him president of the property administration of the Apostolic See . In 1981 he became President of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs of the Holy See .
From 1988 to 1995 he was Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
At the conclave in 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II. He did not participate because he had already passed the age of 80 years.
