Opilio Cardinal Rossi (born May 14, 1910 in New York , USA , † February 9, 2004 in Rome , Italy ) was a Vatican diplomat and later Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Rossi was born in New York in 1910 to an Italian immigrant family. He studied Catholic theology in Piacenza , Emilia-Romagna, Italy . There he received the sacrament of ordination on March 11, 1933 . Rossi then entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and worked first in the Apostolic Nunciature of Belgium and the Netherlands , later in the Papal Embassy in Germany , where he experienced the Second World War and its end in Berlin and stood up for numerous people in need. On November 21, 1953, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular Archbishop of Ancyra and the apostolic nuncio in Ecuador . He was ordained bishop on December 27th of the same year by Aloysius Cardinal Muench , Archbishop ad personam and Bishop of Fargo ; Co- consecrators were Umberto Malchiodi , coadjutor of Piacenza , and Artemio Prati , Bishop of Carpi .

On March 25, 1959, Pope John XXIII appointed him . as Apostolic Nuncio in Chile and on September 25, 1961 as the successor to the late Archbishop Giovanni Dellepiane in the office of head of the Apostolic Nunciature in Austria .

In 1976 he returned to Rome. Pope Paul VI took him on May 24th of the same year as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santa Maria Liberatrice a Monte Testaccio in the college of cardinals . Rossi was President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity from 1976 to 1984 (Vice-President was the German Bishop Paul Josef Cordes from 1980 ), and until 1981 also President of the Pontifical Committee for the Family . Pope John Paul II later appointed him President of the Cardinals Commission for the Papal Shrines of Pompei , Loreto and Bari and President of the Standing Committee for the International Eucharistic Congresses . In 1987 he was elevated to cardinal priest with the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina . After Rossi had reached the age of 80, John Paul II relieved him of all duties in the Roman Curia on January 3, 1991 .

Rossi died in Rome. The funeral ceremony was presided over by Pope John Paul II personally in St. Peter's Basilica on February 13, 2004 , while the mass was celebrated by the then Cardinal Dean Joseph Ratzinger .

Since 1985, the Working Group of Catholic Associations (AKV) has been awarding the Cardinal Opilio Rossi Medal for services to the Catholic lay apostolate on an annual basis . Opilio Rossi has been an honorary member of the Catholic student association KAV Danubia in the ÖCV since June 1967 , since 1995 an honorary member of the Catholic student association KAV Capitolina Rome in the CV and the Catholic student association Lützow Leoben in the MKV . In 1968 he was also awarded the Gold Medal of Honor by the State of Vorarlberg .
