Cardinal Maurice Roy , CC , OBE (born January 25, 1905 in Québec , Canada , † October 24, 1985 ibid) was a Canadian clergyman and Archbishop of Québec .

Life

Maurice Roy studied in Quebec City, Paris and Rome the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy . He received the sacrament of priestly ordination on June 12, 1927 by the Bishop of Nicolet , Joseph-Simon-Herman Brunault , and after completing further studies worked from 1930 as a lecturer at the seminary of Laval. During the Second World War he was the chief chaplain of the military chaplains for the Canadian soldiers .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on February 22, 1946 Bishop of Trois Rivières . The episcopal ordination received Maurice Roy on May 1 of the same year by the Archbishop of Quebec, Jean-Marie-Rodrigue Cardinal Villeneuve ; Co- consecrators were Albini Lafortune , Bishop of Nicolet, and Arthur Douville , Bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe . Shortly afterwards, on June 8th, he was also named military bishop for Canada.

On June 2, 1947, Maurice Roy became Archbishop of Québec, and in 1956 the Pope awarded him the title of " Primate of Canada". Maurice Roy took part in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . Pope Paul VI took him on February 22, 1965 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Nostra Signora del Santissimo Sacramento e dei Santi Martiri Canadesi in the College of Cardinals and entrusted him in addition to his function as shepherd of the Archdiocese of Québec on January 6, 1967 the direction of the Pontifical Commission "Justice et Pax ” and the Pontifical Council for the Laity . In 1973, Maurice Cardinal Roy also became President of the Pontifical Committee for the Family .

On December 16, 1976, Roy first resigned from the management of the three curial authorities. In 1978 he took part in the conclave in August and October 1978 . In 1981 John Paul II also accepted the resignation of the leadership of the Archdiocese of Québec, in 1982 that of the duties of the Canadian military bishop.

He died on October 24, 1985 in Québec and was buried in the local cathedral .
