Nostra Signora del Santissimo Sacramento e dei Santi Martiri canadesi is a parish and titular church in the Roman quarter of Nomentano on Via Giovanni Battista de Rossi. The Church is of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and the Canadian Martyrs (St. René Goupil (1642), St. Isaac Jogues (1646), St. Jean de Lalande (1646), St. Antoine Daniel (1648), St. Jean de Brébeuf (1649), St. Noël Chabanel (1649), St. Charles Garnier (1649) and St. Gabriel Lalemant (1649)).
history
In 1948, the Eucharist decided to build a new General Curia in Rome . The Vicariate of Rome made the approval of the building a condition that a publicly accessible church be built to ensure pastoral care on site.
The first drafts were rejected because they did not fit the environment and pastoral needs. In March 1950, Bruno Maria Apollony Ghetti presented a draft that was approved by the Council for Antiquity and Art. Construction was completed in 1955 and consecrated on June 14, 1955 under the title of Our Lady of the Most Holy Sacrament . On October 19, 1955, the parish was founded by a decree by Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara and entrusted to the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament.
Due to its proximity to the Canadian embassy, the idea arose to make the church the Canadian national church . On November 1, 1962, it was re-consecrated by Paul-Émile Léger , when the church was also given protection to the Canadian martyrs from the 17th century. In 2007 the embassy moved, which led to a decrease in visitors from Canada.
On February 22, 1965, the Canadian primate Maurice Roy was appointed cardinal priest pro hac vice , so only for this case, on the occasion of the Second Vatican Council . On February 5, 1968 the church was elevated to the title Church and Maurice Roy became a regular cardinal priest. His two successors were both Canadians , but Pope Francis ended or interrupted this tradition in 2016 with the appointment of the current Cardinal Patrick D'Rozario from Bangladesh .
description
A staircase leads from the entrance room to the crypt with the baptistery . The church has a rich altar with a monstrance by Francesco Nagni, a canopy with reliefs and a crucifixion group by Angelo Bianchini. The church has numerous decorated and lighted windows by Marcello Avenali and Giovanni Hajnal with representations of biblical and religious scenes related to the Eucharist . The confessionals with their doors made of polychrome crystal glass depicting biblical scenes relating to the sacrament of confession are also of artistic value .
