The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montreal ( latin Archidioecesis Marianopolitana , French archidiocèse de Montréal ) is in Canada situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Montreal .
history
The Archdiocese of Montréal was on May 13, 1836 by Pope Gregory XVI. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Apostolici ministerii from cession of territory of the Archdiocese of Québec as the Diocese of Montréal and subordinated to this as a suffragan . The Diocese of Montréal gave on June 25, 1847 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Bytown . Another assignment of territory took place on June 8, 1852 to establish the diocese of Saint-Hyacinthe .
On June 8, 1886, the diocese of Montréal was by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Montréal gave on April 5, 1892 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Valleyfield . Further territorial assignments took place on January 27, 1904 to found the diocese of Joliette and on June 9, 1933 to found the diocese of Saint-Jean-de-Québec . On June 23, 1951, the Archdiocese of Montréal gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Saint-Jérôme .
The Archdiocese of Montréal is a bishopric traditionally associated with cardinal dignity .
