The Archdiocese of Kingston ( Latin Archidioecesis Regiopolitana , English Archdiocese of Kingston ) is a in Canada situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Kingston .

history

The Archdiocese of Kingston was established on January 12, 1819 by Pope Pius VII from cession of territory from the Diocese of Québec as the Apostolic Vicariate of Upper Canada . On January 17, 1826, the Vicariate Apostolic Upper Canada by Pope Leo XII. raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese of Kingston . The Diocese of Kingston gave on December 17, 1841 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Toronto . Further assignments took place on June 25, 1847 to found the Diocese of Bytown and on January 25, 1874 to found the Vicariate Apostolic North Canada . On July 11, 1882, the Diocese of Kingston gave more parts of its territory to the Diocese of Peterborough.

The Diocese of Kingston was on December 28, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric. On January 21, 1890, the Archdiocese of Kingston gave parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Alexandria in Ontario .
