history

St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in Peterborough

The diocese of Peterborough was on January 25, 1874 by Pope Pius IX. Established from cession of territory by the Diocese of Kingston as Vicariate Apostolic Northern Canada . The Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Canada was on July 11, 1882 by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese of Peterborough . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Kingston as a suffragan . The Diocese of Peterborough gave on September 16, 1904 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie .
