The Roman Catholic Diocese of Antigonish ( Latin Dioecesis Antigonicensis , English Diocese of Antigonish ) is in Canada located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Antigonish (Nova Scotia).
It was founded on September 22, 1844 as the Diocese of Arichat from the Archdiocese of Halifax . On August 23, 1886 the name was changed to Antigonish Diocese. The diocese includes the counties of Antigonish , Pictou , Guysborough , Richmond , Inverness , Victoria and Cape Breton in Nova Scotia .
Well known is the 1874 built cathedral " St. Ninian Cathedral".
In 1853, Bishop Colin Francis MacKinnon founded Saint Francis Xavier University , initially as a seminary .
