Inverness County is one of the currently 18 counties in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia (Nova Scotia). It is located in the east of the province, on Cape Breton Island . The county is bordered by Victoria County to the east and Richmond County to the south . In the southeast is the Cape Breton Regional Municipality . To the west, separated by the Strait of Canso , it is bordered by Antigonish County and Guysborough County . The county has its administrative center in Port Hood . To the northwest it is on the Gulf of St. Lawrence and in the south of the county is the Bras d'Or Lake . In the northeast of the county is the Cape Breton Highlands National Park , one of the Canadian national parks .
In the administrative unit of 3,830.40 km² there were 17,947 inhabitants in 2011, resulting in a population density of 4.7 inhabitants / km². Compared to the census from 2006, the number of inhabitants has decreased again. The population recently decreased by 5.7%, continuing the ongoing downward trend of the last few decades. The county is one of the largest in the province in terms of area and is in the upper mid-range of all counties in terms of population. In terms of population density, it is one of the less densely populated counties in the province.
The county is connected to the rest of the provincial road network via the Nova Scotia Highway 105 . The county is also accessed by second class highways, the Nova Scotia Trunk Highways . In terms of air traffic, the county is developed through Port Hawkesbury Airport and Margaree Airport . With the Celtic Shores Coastal Trail , which follows a disused railway line of the Inverness and Richmond Railway , a section of the Trans Canada Trail can be found in the county.
history
Even before it was discovered by Europeans, this area was a settlement and hunting area for First Nations , the Mi'kmaq . The county was founded in 1835 as the County of Juste au Corps and renamed in 1837 after the Scottish city of Inverness .
Communities
Inverness County has the town of Port Hawkesbury and a First Nations reservation. All other settlements are so-called incorporated villages in the Municipality of Inverness . The administration of these settlements is taken over by the county administration.
