Colchester County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia . The county is bordered by Cumberland County to the northwest and Pictou County to the northeast . To the south is the Halifax Regional Municipality and to the southwest is Hants County .
The name Colchester was adopted in 1780, it is derived from the city of Colchester in Essex . Previously the county was called Cobequid County , derived from the Mi'kmaq word "Wagobagitk", which means "the bay rises steeply", which means the adjacent Cobequid Bay .
The Colchester District , which was formerly part of Halifax County, received county rights in 1835. Three years later, in 1838, a clear boundary was established between Cumberland Counties and Colchester Counties. In 1940 the Parrsboro parish was divided and part of Colchester County was annexed. In 1871 the boundaries between Colchester and Hants Counties and Colchester and Halifax were established. In 1880 the border with Halifax County was changed again. In 1897, some parts of the Colchester-Cumberland Counties border were eventually corrected.
The Colchester-Cumberland County border issue was later reopened and was assigned to a commission of inquiry in 1946. In January 1959, however, the report was closed.
