Pictou is derived from Piktook , which comes from the Mi'kmaq language and means something like exploding gas . From 1759 to 1835 the county was part of Halifax County . Indian reservations in the county include Fischer's Grant 24 Reservation and Merigomish Harbor 35 Reservation.
