Cumberland County is one of the currently 18 counties in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia (Nova Scotia). It is located in the northwest of the province and is bordered by Colchester County to the southeast and New Brunswick Province to the northwest . The county is located to the northeast on Northumberland Strait and to the southwest on the Bay of Fundy (with Chignecto Bay and the Minas Basin ). Its administrative seat is in Amherst . The county and thus the entire province is connected to the rest of the transport network via Nova Scotia Highway 104 , which is part of the Trans-Canada Highway system, and the CN main line from Halifax to Montreal. There is also a train station in Amherst that is used by VIA Rail Canada .

In the 4272.65 km² large administrative unit lived 31,353 inhabitants in 2011, which results in a population density of 7.3 inhabitants / km². Compared to the census from 2006, the number of inhabitants has decreased again. The population decreased by 2.2%. The county is, after the Halifax Regional Municipality , the second largest in the province, but with its population and thus the population density it is only in the middle of all counties.

history

Even before it was discovered by Europeans, this area was a settlement and hunting area for First Nations , the Mi'kmaq . In their language, the area was called Kwesomalegek , which translates as hardwood point into English. The county was founded on June 18, 1759 and named after William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland , a son of George II . Over time, its boundaries have been changed several times.
