Parrsboro is a city in Cumberland County , Nova Scotia , Canada . The city is known for the Ship's Company Theater and the Fundy Geological Museum .

history

The region was initially inhabited by Mi'kmaq Indians. The first European colonists were Acadians , who were expelled by the British in 1755 because they swore no allegiance to the British king. The area was settled by farmers from the New England states. During the American Revolution , the Loyalists came as new settlers.

The city was named after John Parr, the governor of Nova Scotia, in 1784 and received its city charter in 1889.

economy

At the beginning of the 20th century, Parrsboro was important as a port city and a hub for coal from the neighboring town of Springhill . A railway line connected the two cities until the mine disaster in 1958. Today, forestry, agriculture and tourism are sources of income for the city.

Kerry Martens, owner of Headz Gamez International, a company that produces board games, would like to move part of its production to Parrsboro. With a planned 1,500 employees, the company would become Nova Scotia's largest employer.

A marine current power plant has been in trial operation in the bay where the site is located since autumn 2016.
