Truro (in Mi'kmaq : Wagobagitik - "end of the water flow" or "water outlet") is a city in the center of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia and is also the county seat of Colchester County .

The city is located on the south side of the Salmon River , near the confluence with the Cobequid Bay (Mi'kmaq: We'kopekwitk or Wagobagitk - "A bay that runs up very far, its end").

history

For several centuries, the area once belonged to the "Sipekni'katik (Sugapune'gati) District", one of the eight districts of the tribal area of the Mi'kmaq , who called the immediate urban area of Truro and the Cobequid Bay Wagobagitik / We'kopekwitk , Today, their descendants live on several reservations and, as Millbrook First Nation, form one of the 29 recognized Mi'kmaq First Nations in Canada.

The first Europeans to settle here permanently were French settlers, who had established settlements since the beginning of the 18th century and soon developed their own identity as Acadians . The Acadians shortened and corrupted the Mi'kmaq name for the settlement and the adjacent area to "Cobequid" , today only the bay west of Truro is called Cobequid Bay .

In 1727 French settlers founded a small village on the site of today's downtown Truro and named it "Vil Bois Brule" (village in the burned down forest). The Acadians maintained friendly ties with the Acadia- based Algonquian tribes of the Wabanaki Confederation (Abenaki, Penobscot, Mi'kmaq, Passamaquoddy and Maliseet) who were loyal allies of the French in a series of colonial wars between 1688 and 1759 in the fight against the British about Acadia.

Due to the Seven Years' War in North America (1754 to 1763) (English: "French and Indian War"; French: "Guerre de la Conquête") between 1755 and 1762 all Acadians who did not want to take an oath of allegiance to the British Crown became violent deported or expelled to New England. Many Acadians had previously left the region out of fear.

After the forcible expulsion of the Francophone Acadians, the British repopulated the area with settlers from New England in 1761 - mostly Presbyterian Ulster Scots from Northern Ireland - and the settlement was now named after the town of Truro in Cornwall ( England ). Initially a small community of farmers, the settlement grew rapidly after the construction of the railway between Halifax and Pictou in 1858. In 1875 Truro was finally registered as a city.

traffic

Today Truro is known as the "Hub of Nova Scotia" because it is a crossing point of the Canadian National Railway , between Halifax and Montreal , and the Nova Scotia Railway, between Truro and Sydney . Until the 1980s, Truro was also the end point of the Dominion Atlantic Railway , which ran through the Annapolis Valley to Yarmouth .

Truro also plays an important role as a junction in car traffic on the highways of Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Highway 104 , part of the Trans-Canada Highway , and the Nova Scotia Highway 102 intersect here .

Furthermore, Truro has a bus connection to Halifax and Amherst , with which you can get to Toronto with various stops .

Educational institutions

Truro has several junior high schools and a high school called the Cobequid Educational Center , which is the largest in the province with around 1,700 students. There is also a Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) campus in the city , which also includes a fitness center and swimming pool. In the neighboring village of Bible Hill is also the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC), which has extensive research areas and an area with accommodation.
