Stewiacke is a small town in Colchester County in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia . The place has 1438 inhabitants (2011).
geography
Stewiacke is located at the confluence of the Stewiacke River and Shubenacadie River . Halifax is about 50 kilometers southwest . The connecting roads Prince Edward Island Route 2 and Prince Edward Island Route 102 run through Stewiacke.
history
The area of today's Stewiacke was inhabited hundreds of years ago by the Mi'kmaq Indians . The name of the place was spoken by these Ah-seed-ee-a-waac , ie "place where the sand moves" (English: place where the sands move ). The first settlers built their houses there from 1839. The official founding of the Town of Stewiacke took place on August 11, 1906.
Today's residents are convinced that their city is exactly halfway between the North Pole and the equator , which are both 4985 kilometers away. They therefore give the place the nickname Halfway between the North Pole and the Equator .
In 1991, bones of a mastodon ( Mammut americanum ) were found during mine work about ten kilometers south of Stewiacke . For the occasion, the Mastodon Ridge amusement center with a mastodon sculpture was built as a tourist attraction.
