Bryan Stevenson (born November 14, 1959 in Milton , Delaware ) is an American lawyer and civil rights activist .

Life

Stevenson grew up in Delaware, his mother is a church musician. He has been a professor at New York University School of Law (NYU Law) since 1998 . In 1989 he founded the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) .

In 2011 he was honored with the Four Freedoms Award in the category Freedom from Fear in Hyde Park , New York .

In 2014 he was selected in the Social Sciences category of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In 2019 the film Just Mercy about Stevenson's life and in particular the case of Walter MacMillian was released . The lawyer was embodied by Michael B. Jordan . In Germany, the film was released on February 27, 2020.

Bryan Stevenson received the “ Alternative Nobel Prize ” in 2020 for his fight against racism in the American judiciary. Stevenson said of the award that it connects people around the world who are fighting against inequality, oppression and abuse of power.
