Colin Francis MacKinnon

Colin Francis MacKinnon (born July 20, 1810 in William's Point , Antigonish County , Nova Scotia , Canada , † September 26, 1879 ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Arichat in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Life

Colin Francis MacKinnon came from a Scottish immigrant family from Eigg , Inner Hebrides , who came to Nova Scotia via the USA in 1791 . MacKinnon studied theology and philosophy in Rome and received a doctorate in both subjects . On June 4, 1837, he received by the prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples Giacomo Filippo Cardinal Fransoni the priesthood . He was then a pastor in St. Andrews, Sydney County , Nova Scotia.

On September 21, 1851 Pope Pius IX appointed him . as bishop of the Diocese of Arichat (from 1886: Diocese of Antigonish). He was ordained episcopal on February 27, 1852 in St. Mary's Cathedral in Halifax, the Archbishop of Halifax , William Walsh ; Consecration assistant was the future Archbishop of Halifax Thomas Louis Connolly OFMCap . This episcopal ordination was the first to take place in Halifax.

MacKinnon founded Saint Francis Xavier University in 1853 , initially as a seminary . He took part in the First Vatican Council as a council father .

With the acceptance of his resignation in 1877 he was by Pope Pius IX. appointed titular archbishop of Amida .
