The Inner Hebrides are a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean on the north-west coast of Scotland . Most of the Inner Hebrides belong to the Argyll & Bute Council , while the Isle of Skye and small neighboring islands belong to the Council Area Highland . The straits Little Minch and North Minch separate them from the Outer Hebrides to the north-west .

The Inner Hebrides have become a popular vacation spot. The islands of Skye, Iona , from which Scotland was Christianized, and Staffa are particular attractions .

geology

The predominant rocks are of volcanic origin. There are gneisses , granites and tertiary volcanics such as basalt . The youngest of these rocks are around 60 million years old. The landscape was shaped by glaciers .

The Black Cuillins on Skye are made of gabbro , the Red Hills of granite. Skye also come limestone and sandstone from the Jurassic ago. The mountain The Storr and the bizarre, upright rock Old Man of Storr are relics of this time.

economy

Tourism is one of the main sources of income. The Inner Hebrides are also known for numerous whiskey brands such as Laphroaig and Talisker . The number of distilleries is particularly high on the island of Islay.

Culture

Especially on Islay Sunday is a rest day celebrated and respected as a rest day. The highlight is going to church; apart from that, public life largely comes to a standstill.
