history

The history of Kerrera is linked to the MacDougall clan , who took possession of it in the 12th century. The Scottish King Alexander II assembled his fleet in Horseshoe Bay on the south coast of the island as part of the preparations for the invasion of the Hebrides . Before completing the measure, however, he became feverish and died on July 8, 1249 on Kerrera. In 1263 the Norwegian King Håkon IV held a meeting with the chiefs of the Hebridean clans on Kerrera. In the 16th century the MacDougalls established their ancestral seat there with Gylen Castle . In 1647 the castle was besieged, as a result of which the Covenanters under General Leslie burned the building and killed the residents. Gylen Castle was never inhabited and fell into disrepair. The ruins preserved today are classified in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. At the beginning of the 19th century, around 200 people lived on Kerrera. After the population had fallen to 27 by 1971, 34 people lived there again in 2011.
