history

Gylen Castle was the ancestral seat of the MacDougall clan . The building was built in the 16th century by Duncan MacDougall of MacDougall and Dunollie and according to various reports it was completed in either 1582 or 1587. In 1647 the castle was besieged, as a result of which the Covenanters under General Leslie burned the building and killed the residents. Gylen Castle was never inhabited and fell into disrepair.

In 1913, minor repairs were carried out on the building to prevent it from collapsing. In 1972, Leslie Grahame MacDougall applied for a grant to restore Gylen Castle from the Historic Preservation Authority and secured £ 200,000. Additionally an amount of £ 300,000 was raised through an appeal for donations among the clan members. Restoration work began in 1993. In February 2002, a detailed archaeological investigation of the ruins, the outbuildings and the surrounding area was carried out. After the construction work was completed, Gylen Castle was finally opened to visitors on May 12, 2006.
