Pabay ( Scottish Gaelic Pabaigh , Old Norse Papey , German as: "Priests Island") is an uninhabited island to Scotland belonging Inner Hebrides .

Surname

The island is named after the papar (from Irish pap , German: "Pope"). These were Irish monks who had already settled in Iceland before the Norwegians arrived .

geography

Pabay is located near the Isle of Skye in the Inner Sound of Skye, around four kilometers northeast of Broadford . To the north of Pabay is Longay Island and Scalpay Island to the west . Like Longay and Scalpay, Pabay belongs to the Civil parish Strath , the main part of which is on Skye.

Pabay is around 1.22 km². The island is roughly circular. Unlike the surrounding islands, the island is largely flat with cliffs on the north and east coast. The highest elevation is 28 meters. When the tide is low , the reefs around Pabay dry up.

Pabay consists mainly of fossil limestone , mixed with mica-containing slate , which is known as pabba shale (German: Pabba-Schiefer). This rock was formed as sediment during the Jurassic Age and was pushed upwards by volcanic activity around 60 million years ago. The resulting dykes protect the island from erosion due to their hardness.

history

There are remains of a 13th century chapel on Pabay. In the 16th century, the island, along with Longay, was considered a pirate haven. Pabay was settled in the 19th century.

Today the island has no permanent residents, but is accessible by boat and helicopter and can be inhabited. In the south of the island there is a farm and other agricultural buildings.

Pabay regularly issues its own stamps. There is therefore a letter box on the island for sending the postage franked with it.

nature

On the island there are heather , dry grassland , salt marshes , individual trees and reforestations.

Others

Three small islands in the Outer Hebrides are called Paabay. On the Shetland Islands and Orkney , the island name Papa can be found several times . All of these names are also derived from papar .
