Broadford ( Scottish Gaelic An t-ATH Leathann , "the broad ford") with 747 inhabitants according to Portree the second largest town of the Scottish island of Skye (Isle of Skye). With a supermarket, a continuously open gas station, several restaurants and hotels, as well as a museum and a youth hostel, it is an important service center on the sparsely populated island. Broadford is also home to the main hospital in the region.

history

1322 took place in the area of today's Broadford a battle between the clans of the Frasers and the MacLeods instead. The village was first mentioned as a cattle market in the late 18th century. In 1812 the road from Kyleakin to Portree (today the A87 runs there ) was built, creating an important infrastructural requirement for the town's growth. At that time there was also a whiskey distillery in Broadford , but it did not last long.

location

Broadford is in the southeastern part of the Isle of Skye and is part of the Civil parish Strath . After about 13 kilometers, the place is the first significant settlement on Skye if you follow the course of the A87 after crossing the Skye Bridge, which opened in 1995 .

Others

There is a song by the rock band Jethro Tull called Broadford Bazaar named after this place. The piece was published on the CDs Nightcap and Heavy Horses - there as a bonus piece.
