Kyleakin (from Scottish Gaelic Caol Àcain , German: Haakonsstrasse) is a village in the southeast of the Isle of Skye , which belongs to the Inner Hebrides . It is within the Civil parish Strath . The population of the place was well below 1000 in 2006.
Kyleakin is opposite the village of Kyle of Lochalsh . Both places are only separated from each other by Loch Alsh, which is quite narrow at this point . Until 1995, when the Skye Bridge was opened, the place was the ferry port for traffic between the Scottish mainland with the ferry port Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye. There was a continuous shuttle service operated by the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry company with two ferries, and sometimes even three ferries in the summer, which ran around the clock. Nevertheless, in the last few years before the opening of the bridge, traffic jams in the town were the order of the day due to increasing tourism, especially in the summer months.
