Societas Sanctae Birgittae

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Societas Sanctae Birgittae (SSB) is an association of men and women in the Church of Sweden , which in honor of Saint Bridget wants to serve and in their succession of the Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church in Sweden.

The SSB was founded in 1920 as a sanctuary for all who, in a time of liturgical and theological impoverishment, long for a richer worship service , more inner piety and biblical preaching in the Church of Sweden.

The SSB seeks to realize these concerns through its work for a constant renewal of the organization of the Lord's Supper and the prayer life of the individual and the communities. Furthermore, the SSB works to ensure that the preaching and instruction are more and more shaped by faithfulness to God's Word and the Lutheran Confession and that individual confession is increasingly used.

The SSB has about 200 members (men and women) and holds its general chapter annually around July 23, the day of St. Birgitta's death, usually in Vadstena . A convention usually takes place three times a year in different places in the country. In addition, the SSB serves as a prayer community in which the brothers and sisters are remembered during daily devotions.

The SSB is headed by one of its clergymen as confessor (head) and one of the sisters as superior. A bishop also visits the community .
