MacLeod [məˈklaʊd] ("son of Leod") is the name of a Scottish clan that comes from the Outer Hebrides and whose members are also settled on the Isle of Skye and on some coastal areas of the Highlands .
history
The progenitor of the clan is Leod, the son of a Norwegian king of the 13th century. Leod's two sons, Tormod and Torquil, gave birth to two sub-branches commonly called Clan Tormod and Clan Torquil . The Tormods, who referred to themselves as the MacLeods of MacLeod and came from Harris and Skye, fought with Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn . Their ancestral home is in Dunvegan Castle on Skye and has been inhabited by the family for seven centuries. The Tormods lost hundreds of clan members in 1651 when they supported the Stuarts at Worcester ; as a result, they remained neutral in the second Jacobite revolt in 1745 . The Torquils, the MacLeods of Lewis , supported the MacDonalds and their claim to the title of Lord of the Isles ("Lord of the Isles"). They were also known for extensive internal disputes and feuds with neighbors, which culminated in a confrontation with the Scottish Crown and the MacKenzies - many members of the clan were killed as a result. Later, the MacLeods of Raasay took control of the Torquils and supported, among other things, the second Jacobite revolt in 1745 with a hundred fighters. In 1846, however, the 11th Laird was forced to sell the island of Raasay for lack of money.
The MacLeod's motto is Hold fast (“Stay steadfast”).
