Ogilvy (also Ogilvie ) is the name of a Scottish clan in the Scottish Highlands . The Ogilvys are one of the most respected families in Scotland.
history
Origins of the clan
The name Ogilvy comes from a place near Glamis , which was first documented as Ogilvin around 1205 . This in turn is derived from an early form of the Welsh words uchel (English: "high") and either ma ("plain", "place") or ban ("hill").
Patrick de Ogilvy appears on the Ragman Roll, in which he swears allegiance to King Edward I of England in 1296 .
Scottish Wars of Independence
During the Scottish Wars of Independence , Patrick's sons supported King Robert I of Scotland . The family's estates are in Angus , where they were hereditary sheriffs in the 14th and 15th centuries .
Anglo-Scottish Wars
During the Anglo-Scottish Wars against England in the 16th century, the Ogilvy clan fought in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh , where the Chief's fourth eldest son (James) was killed in 1547.
The clan today
The current Chief of the Clan's David Ogilvy, 13th Earl of Airlie , which Lord Chamberlain of the Queen was. The connection with the British royal family was strengthened when Angus Ogilvy (the brother of the Chiefs) married Princess Alexandra of Kent . Today the Ogilvy family is scattered all over the world. B. Relatives in Australia , Norway , the United States and New Zealand .
