Jim Rygiel

Jim Rygiel (born February 17, 1955 in Kenosha , Wisconsin ) is an American VFX supervisor who received three Oscars for the Lord of the Rings trilogy .

Life

He attended St. Joseph Catholic High School in Kenosha. He then graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to Bachelor in the field of visual arts. This was followed by a master’s degree in visual arts, which he graduated from the Otis Parsons School of Design in 1980 (now renamed Otis College of Art and Design ). After graduating in 1980, he worked for Pacific Electric Pictures , one of the first companies involved in computer animation for advertising and the film market.

In 1983 he moved to Digital Productions , for which he worked in 1984 as senior technical manager on the film Starfight . After a stint at Pacific Data Images and Metrolight , he was asked in 1989 whether he would like to set up and manage a computer animation department at Boss Film Studios . After just one year, the department grew to over 75 animators and in the following years produced films such as Batman's Return , Last Action Hero and Starship Troopers . After the company closed in 1997, he worked on such films as Star Trek: The Uprising , 102 Dalmatians, and The Fast and the Furious . In 2001-2003 he worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy . He received the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for all three films . He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as well as the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts .
