The Amazing Spider-Man is an American comic adaptation by director Marc Webb that premiered on June 28, 2012 . The film was released in Germany on June 28, 2012 in the United States on July 3, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the first part of a new edition of Spider-Man - franchises in the cinema after the film trilogy by Sam Raimi , the 2007 Spider-Man 3 ended. It retells the story of how Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man, but includes new characters and plot elements.

The Amazing Spider-Man was released, like Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 , in IMAX format. The film can also be seen in 3D . On April 17, 2014, the sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro was released in theaters.

action

While playing, young Peter Parker discovers that his father's study, a genetic researcher , has been ransacked during a break-in. His dismayed parents then leave him in the care of his uncle Ben and his aunt May. Shortly afterwards they are killed in a plane crash.

Years later: Teenager Peter still lives with Uncle Ben and Aunt May. In high school , the gifted amateur photographer is bullied by classmate Flash Thompson and is drawn to the beautiful Gwen Stacy, who seems to return his affection.

After a day at school, Peter discovers a briefcase in his uncle's cellar that once belonged to his father and provides clues to his research. His research leads him to Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner. The one-armed scientist in the service of Oscorp Industries has long been researching cross-species genetics and is trying to find a way how humans can completely regenerate severed limbs , similar to lizards . As a supposed intern, Peter gains access to the Oscorp laboratories. There he is bitten by a genetically modified spider, which results in him receiving superpowers: superhuman strength, agility and reflexes, as well as sticky hands and feet and a supernatural instinct.

To find out more, he seeks a conversation with Dr. Connors. He lets him in on his further plans and regrets that he is missing an important equation to complete his research. Peter can write down the formula from his head that he read earlier in his father's records. Connors offers that Peter can assist him with his research.

After an argument with his uncle, Peter runs away. While searching for him, Ben is shot dead by a robber whom Peter had recently observed during a robbery, but not stopped. Driven by guilt, Peter then creates the alter ego Spider-Man in order to search for the murderer. He constructs a device for shooting extremely tear-resistant spider threads and tailors a suit and mask. So he wanders through the city at night and repeatedly delivers criminals to the police who look like the murderer. Its director, Captain George Stacy, is Gwen's father. He classifies Spiderman's actions as illegal vigilante justice and wants to expose and arrest him. Meanwhile, Connors is doing new, promising tests with Peter's supplementary formula and injecting himself with lizard DNA to regenerate his missing right forearm. The self-experiment, however, ends with the fact that he mutates into the Lizard , an oversized lizard who plans to transform New York's residents into the newly created species.

Peter is now with Gwen and has revealed his identity as Spider-Man to her. He feels responsible for stopping the Lizard, as he helped create it by establishing the equation. He assigns Gwen to make an antidote at Oscorp and follows the lizard through the sewers. Here he learns of Lizard's plan to distribute his serum as gas from the Oscorp Tower, where Gwen is currently located. On the way there, Spider-Man is posed by George Stacy. Peter has to reveal his identity so he can convince Stacy of the danger Gwen is in, and Stacy lets him go. However, a policeman shoots Spider-Man and the injury makes it difficult for him to get to the Oscorp Tower.

The lizard has meanwhile transformed some people with samples of his lizard DNA serum and is now installing a system on the top of the Oscorp Tower to spread the serum across the city and thus turn all residents into lizards. Here he is posed by Spider-Man and a fight ensues. Captain Stacy, who has since received the antidote from Gwen, intervenes and is able to hold out the Lizard so that Spider-Man can exchange the poison for the antidote. The Lizard seriously injures Stacy, but cannot prevent the antidote from spreading, to which all affected people transform back, including the Lizard in Dr. Connors, who then saves Peter from falling into the depths, because he gets his mind back with the healing at the same time. Peter finds the captain badly injured, but any help comes too late. Before Stacy dies, he apologizes to Peter and tells him that this town needs him. But since he always has enemies and so will endanger the people around him, he has to promise Stacy to keep Gwen out of everything.

As a result, Peter stays away from Gwen's father's funeral. When Gwen asks him about it, he ends their relationship. However, Gwen realizes that Peter is bound by his promise and that this is done for her protection. The following day of school, however, Peter makes a hint that he may not keep his promise.

After the credits you can see Dr. Curt Connors sitting in a prison cell. In a short conversation with a person who is barely recognizable in the shadows and possibly only exists in Connor's imagination, it is implied that Peter did not learn the whole truth about his parents' death.

production

Spider-Man 4

In 2009 it was planned that Spider-Man 4 would appear in Germany on May 5, 2011 and would represent a continuation of the previous Spider-Man trilogy . Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have already been confirmed as directors and leading actors, as has Kirsten Dunst , who should have appeared as Mary Jane Watson for the last time . Although as the villain with Dylan Baker as the Lizard , who since Spider-Man 2 as Dr. Curt Connors acted and one waited for a transformation into that monster, the choice fell on John Malkovich as Vulture . Anne Hathaway won another main character.

The first problems surfaced in July 2009: After David Lindsay-Abaire started writing the script for Spider-Man 4 and submitted it to Sony after completion , the producers did not like the script, so James Vanderbilt should make improvements. However, after they were not satisfied with his version of Spider-Man 4 , Gary Ross was the last to make improvements to the script.

Before the filming of the film, which was scheduled for March 2010, began, the scripts for Spider Man 5 and 6 , which should be written by James Vanderbilt , were already being worked on . It was also planned that Venom , one of Spider-Man's greatest enemies, would receive a spin-off film . Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick should already have written a script for the offshoot. Gary Ross was supposed to direct the Venom movie.

In early January 2010, Sam Raimi got into a conflict with Sony over the script, as they opposed Malkovich as villain Vulture and also against a commitment from Anne Hathaway, which was too expensive for the studios. In addition, Raimi, who was enthusiastic about the visual effects of Avatar - Departure for Pandora , requested the same effects for Spider-Man 4 . The production work was stopped until further notice and the start date was postponed indefinitely. A few days later, John Malkovich confirmed that he was playing Spider-Man's opponent Vulture . One day later, on January 12, 2010, however, Sony announced that it would disband the team around the fourth Spider-Man film and restart the series. A short time before, Maguire was optimistic about Spider-Man 4 . In addition, Sony said it had already planned a remake for 2012 anyway. Raimi, however, should still be allowed to do Spider-Man 4 as the end of the successful series.

A Sony insider sums up Raimi's planned plot as follows:

“Peter Parker gets over M [ary] J [ane Watson], finds a new girl [and] falls in love. But: Peter also discovers her father is actually the Vulture, a naughty green guy with wings […]. Peter is torn between the love of his new lady and taking down the Vulture. [...] (H) e decides to take down the vulture, and kills him. This patricide goes down poorly with Peter's new fiancée, and she rejects him. Despondent, Peter decides to abandon his superpowers, and Movie No. 4 ends with Peter Parker throwing away his Spider-Man mask […]. ”

“Peter Parker gets over M [ary] J [ane Watson], finds a new girl [and] falls in love. But: Peter also finds out that her father is the villain Vulture , an evil, green man with wings [...]. Peter is torn between his new wife and the hunt for the bad guy. […] [E] r grabs the Vulture and kills him. When his new girlfriend, to whom he is already engaged, finds out about this, she disposes of him. Devastated, Peter Parker decides to turn away from his superpowers and Spider-Man number four ends when Peter throws away his Spider-Man mask [...]. "

The Amazing Spider-Man

Emergence

After the announcement of Spider-Man 4 , Marc Webb - the studios 'favorite -, Gary Ross and Michael Bay came up as directors' candidates the same day . In a press release, Sony announced that in the film Spider-Man would go back to high school . In addition, Sony announced that the reboot should be darker than the original series.

A week after the chaos surrounding Spider-Man 4 and the revival with The Amazing Spider-Man , the title of which was only announced in February 2011 with the start date, July 3, 2012, Marc Webb became the director of the Spider-Man reboot officially appointed. He signed for a film and with an option for two more sequels.

That the film series should be multi-part was confirmed in March 2011 when James Vanderbilt from Columbia was commissioned to write the screenplay for the second part. In August 2011, the start date was set for May 2, 2014. Marc Webb is again directing the film, and Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner are responsible for the final script for the sequel.

occupation

Andrew Garfield

The role of Peter Parker aka Spider-Man went to Andrew Garfield in mid-2010 after much speculation . His high school love, Gwen Stacy , is portrayed by Emma Stone . Stone described Stacy as a father's daughter. To play Stacy, Stone dyed her hair from red to blonde .

As the villain, Rhys Ifans acts as the Lizard alias Dr. Curt Connors . He said that he did not embody an evil character, but rather a character with many vices, as for example in The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are the case. In September 2011, Ifans confirmed that he could be seen as a person for most of the film. Ifans wore a CGI suit while he was being filmed as the Lizard .

Furthermore, Martin Sheen , who later openly admitted to having almost no idea about Spider-Man, is seen in the role of Peter Parker's uncle, Ben Parker , while Sally Field plays his aunt May Parker .

In addition, Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy to see. He is Gwen's father and works in the New York Police Department . He too admitted that he wasn't a Spider-Man fan. Instead, he even said that he was more of a fan of the dark Batman comics. While Chris Zylka , as he announced in late 2010, plays high school football player and bully Eugene Flash Thompson , Irrfan Khan introduces Dr. Ratha . Khan said that Ratha was a crucial person in the film and that he was only accepted for the role after his appearance on the television series In Treatment - The Therapist .

In a short scene, Stan Lee can be seen with a cameo as in many other Marvel films.

Filming

Filming began on December 6, 2010 in Los Angeles . In California , the other locations were Bellflower and the Sony Picture Studios in Culver City . It was also shot in New York . The RED Epic with Panavision Primo and Zeiss Ultra Prime Lenses served as the camera . In addition, the strip was immediately rotated in 3D and not converted later. Filming ended in April 2011.

synchronization

The film was set to music at Interopa Film . Klaus Bickert wrote the dialogue book, Joachim Tennstedt directed the dialogue.

Compared to the comic and the trilogy by Sam Raimi

Compared to the comics and the Raimi trilogy, some details have been changed in this film. While Spider-Man was able to create a net by himself with Raimi, in this film, as in the comics, he uses special nozzles that create a net and which he therefore has to use sparingly. In the comics, Dr. Connors never worked with Peter's father, and Peter doesn't find out what happened to his parents until much later than in this film. As in the comics, Uncle Ben is killed by a burglar, but he didn't rob a shop there, but the television studio in which Peter also appeared as Spider-Man. It was only this incident that opened his eyes to use his strength for this. With his distrust of Spider-Man, Captain Stacy has traits of J. Jonah Jameson, who does not appear in this film. In contrast to this film, in the comic book version, Stacy was convinced that Spider-Man was on the side of the righteous.

success

Production costs were $ 230 million, making this film the most expensive in the series after Spider-Man 3. Despite the higher ticket prices for the 3D screenings, US revenues are below those of its predecessors. After five weeks they were at 252.7 million US dollars, while the three "Raimi versions" grossed over 300 and even 350 million US dollars in the same time. The Spider-Man's fourth film appearance grossed over 750 million US dollars worldwide, which is also a great financial success, even if it is less than the income from the older Spider-Man films. In the list of the world's most successful films of all time, The Amazing Spider-Man is currently number 104 (as of August 8, 2020).

Reviews

“Andrew Garfield is wonderful in the role of Peter Parker. […] Garfield [finds] the right expression time and again. And all the splendid scenes in which Parker learns to appreciate and use his newfound spider powers, thrive on Webb's virtuoso staging as well as on Garfield's play. In addition, the chemistry between Garfield and his film partner Stone is right [...] Some of the supporting roles are well cast; Martin Sheen in particular stands out as Peter's loyal uncle. Parker's aunt is played by the equally convincing Sally Field. [...] 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is not just a superhero action movie with spectacular show values. Webb brings us closer to the person who is in the red and blue Spider costume; and sometimes he succeeds even better than Sam Raimi before. "

- Matthias von Viereck : dpa

"The most gifted idea of the creators was to allow Peter this time to reveal the existence of Spider-Man to people who are close to him: The smart Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, whose heart wins Peter, couldn't be fooled anyway. That increases the emotionality - and of course the tension, because it's not just about a boy vs. mutated lizard goes, even if this conflict of course ensures the effective showdown at a dizzying height: Here, the message of the film is underlined again in wild action: You have to accept your weaknesses if you want to win. The fourth 'Spider-Man' takes a big step in this direction, away from the unspeakable bombast of the third part, which threatened to sink the franchise, towards a purged feverishness that could do with a little more casualness and belief in oneself. "

"The 'reboot' of the earlier 'Spider-Man' films does not add any original ideas or interpretations to the title character, but entertains thanks to the charming acting design of the hero and the secondary characters and the furious show values in the action scenes."
