Andrew Russell Garfield (born August 20, 1983 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American - British actor .

Life

Garfield was born in Los Angeles to an American and a British woman. The family moved to the UK when Garfield was three years old; he grew up in Epsom , Surrey , England. After graduating from London's Central School of Speech and Drama , Garfield began working as a stage actor. In 2004 he received the Manchester Evening News Theater Award for Best Newcomer for his performance in the play Kes at the Royal Exchange Theater in Manchester . In 2007 he was honored with the Milton Shulman Award for best newcomer at the 2006 Evening Standard Theater Awards.

In 2007 he was hired by Robert Redford for the role of a student in The Lions and Lambs . In 2008 he received the BAFTA Film Award for his acting performance in the TV movie Boy A ; in the same year he took on the role of Anton in Terry Gilliam's fantasy film The Cabinet of Doctor Parnassus , where he played alongside Heath Ledger , Christopher Plummer and Lily Cole .

In the Golden Globe Award- winning film The Social Network , which is about the genesis of the social network Facebook , he embodies the co-founder Eduardo Saverin . His performance earned him, among other things, a 2011 Golden Globe Award nomination for best supporting actor.

Garfield played the role of the superhero once played by Tobey Maguire in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), the first part of a reboot of the Spider-Man films . He also played this role in 2014 in its sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro .

In 2013 the American director Martin Scorsese announced that he would use Garfield for the lead role of the Portuguese Father Sebastião Rodrigues of the Jesuits for his passion project Silence . The drama , published in 2016, is an adaptation of the eponymous novel Schweigen by the award-winning Japanese writer Endō Shūsaku . In addition to Garfield, Liam Neeson and Adam Driver were also seen.

In 2016 Garfield starred in Mel Gibson's war drama Hacksaw Ridge - The Decision . His portrayal of the soldier Desmond T. Doss earned him his first Oscar nomination in 2017 and a nomination for Best Actor at the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards .

Private life

From 2008 to 2011 he was in a relationship with Shannon Woodward . He was then in a relationship with fellow actor Emma Stone from 2011 to mid-2015 .
