history

Epsom has achieved historical fame through the annual horse races at the Epsom Downs racecourse and the derby that was first established here . Based on the first horse races that took place in the area of Epsom Downs in the 17th century , the horse races "Oaks" for mares since 1779 and the "Derby Stakes" (also The.) , Founded by Edward Smith Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby , take place Derby , internationally known as Epsom Derby ) has been held here since 1780. On June 4, 1913, the suffragette Emily Davison ran onto the track during a gallop. There she was overrun by the horse of King George V and died four days later in Epsom College Hospital.

The origins of the horse races at Epsom go back to recreational entertainment for spa guests, Epsom was known in the 18th century for its medicinal spring. Sal anglicum , Sal catharticum or Epsom salt were extracted from this medicinal spring as early as 1695 . In this way, Epsom gave its name to the hydrous sulphate mineral Epsomite, named by François Sulpice Beudant in 1832 .

Healthcare

The main hospital in the city is Epsom Hospital , which serves as a teaching hospital for both Imperial College London and St George’s at the University of London .

The first hospital in Epsom was established in 1871 in the converted buildings of the Pembroke Cottages and opened in 1873 with only eight beds as Epsom and Ewell Cottage Hospital . Four years later, in 1877, they moved to Hawthorne Place . On the occasion of the golden jubilee of Victoria , Queen of the United Kingdom , a new hospital was built on Alexandra Road , which was officially inaugurated by Princess Maria von Teck in 1889 .

The first buildings on what is now Epsom Hospital on Dorking Road were built in 1890 and operated as a not-for-profit organization for over fifty years before the National Health Service's local trust was established in 1949 . At that time the hospital had forty beds. The previously existing Cottage Hospital moved in 1988 and was called West Park Hospital from then on . The old buildings on Alexandra Road have been converted into a surgical practice.
