Thomas Mayr-Harting (born May 22, 1954 in Epsom , Surrey ) is an Austrian diplomat who works as the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairmanship for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict . Before that, he was Managing Director (Executive Director) for Europe and Central Asia in the European External Action Service from November 2015 to August 2019 . From October 2011 to October 2015 he was Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU Ambassador) to the United Nations in New York . Before working for the EU, he was Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations in New York since December 2008, and from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010, he was also Austria's representative on the UN Security Council . In November 2009 he was President of the Security Council. In his capacity as the Austrian UN Ambassador, he was also Vice President of the 66th  General Assembly of the United Nations .

Life

Thomas Mayr-Harting received his doctorate in 1977 from the University of Vienna as Dr. iur. From 1977 to 1978 he studied at the College of Europe in Bruges ( Belgium ). In 1978 Mayr-Harting received the diploma of the Hague Academy for International Law .

Mayr-Harting joined the Austrian diplomatic service in 1979. During his career he worked in the following areas, among others:

  • 1982–1986: Austrian Mission to the European Communities in Brussels
  • 1986–1990: Austrian Embassy in Moscow
  • 1991–1995: Cabinet of the Austrian Foreign Minister Alois Mock
  • 1995–1999: Deputy Political Director and Head of the Department for Security Policy and Policy Issues
  • 1999-03: Austrian Ambassador to Belgium, Head of the Austrian Mission to NATO
  • 2002-04: Special Representative of the Austrian Foreign Minister for the Western Balkans

From 2003 to 2008 Ambassador Mayr-Harting was Political Director (Head of the Political Section) of the Foreign Ministry. In 2008 he was also chairman of the supervisory board of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).

Thomas Mayr-Harting has been married to Marie Elisabeth Stolberg-Stolberg since 1984 and has three children. He is a brother of the British historian Henry Mayr-Harting and a grandson of the Austro-Czechoslovak legal scholar and politician Robert Mayr-Harting .
