Alexander Schallenberg (born June 20, 1969 in Bern , Switzerland ) is an Austrian lawyer , diplomat and non-party politician . Since January 29, 2020 he has been Federal Minister for European and International Affairs in the Federal Government Brief II . Previously, he was Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs in the Bierlein Federal Government from June 2019 and in the Federal Government Kurz II from January 7, 2020. In June 2019 he was also appointed Federal Minister in the Federal Chancellery ( Chancellery Minister ) and was a member of the Federal Chancellery until January 2020 entrusted the management of the agendas for EU, art, culture and media.

Life

Alexander Schallenberg comes from the former noble family Schallenberg and is the son of the former ambassador and general secretary of the Foreign Ministry Wolfgang Schallenberg . He grew up in India, Spain and Paris - the Ambassador stations of his father - and studied between 1989 and 1994 Law at the University of Vienna and the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas . He then completed a postgraduate LL.M degree at the Collège d'Europe in Bruges until 1995 .

After successfully passing the entrance examination (A-Préalable) , Schallenberg joined the Foreign Ministry in 1997. From 2000 to 2005 he headed the legal department of the Permanent Representation of Austria to the European Union in Brussels . In 2006 he became press spokesman for the then Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik and continued this activity under her successor Michael Spindelegger . Under Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz , Schallenberg was appointed head of the staff unit for strategic foreign policy planning in 2013. In 2016 he took over the management of the European section of the Foreign Ministry.

In the course of the formation of the Federal Government Short I after the National Council election in 2017 , he negotiated on the side of the ÖVP in the sub-group for Europe and foreign policy. Karin Kneissl, who later became Foreign Minister, negotiated for the FPÖ as his counterpart .

After transferring the EU agendas from the Foreign Ministry to the Federal Chancellery, Schallenberg was entrusted with the management of the EU Coordination Section of the Federal Chancellery from March 1, 2018, and in this function he played a decisive role in the preparation and implementation of the 2018 Austrian EU Council Presidency .

Under Federal Chancellor Brigitte Bierlein , Schallenberg was appointed Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs on June 3, 2019. On June 6, he was also appointed Minister of the Chancellery and was entrusted with the management of the EU, art, culture and media agendas until the end of the Bierlein Federal Government . As the only member of the transitional government, he remained in office after the formation of the Federal Government Kurz II and was sworn in as Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs on January 7, 2020. Since January 29, 2020 he has been Federal Minister for European and International Affairs in the Federal Government Brief II.

Schallenberg is divorced and has four children.
