Simon Coveney ( Irish Síomón Ó Cómhanaigh , born June 16, 1972 in Cork ) is an Irish politician and member of the Fine Gael .

Life

Coveney attended the Royal Agriculture College in Gloucestershire , where he received his Bachelor of Science . He also attended Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare , University College Cork and Gurteen Agricultural College in County Tipperary .

Coveney was a member of the Cork County Council from 1999 to 2003 and served on various committees in this capacity. In October 1998 he was first elected to the Dáil Éireann . The by-election taking place here had become necessary to fill the seat in Dáil Éireann, which had become vacant due to the death of Coveney's father, the politician Hugh Coveney . Coveney was re-elected in May 2002 and five years later (2007). The latter led to his resignation from his seat in the European Parliament . He had been a member of the European Parliament since June 2004. His party colleague Colm Burke moved up there for him.

On March 9, 2011, Simon Coveney became Irish Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. During the cabinet reshuffle in July 2014, he also became Minister of Defense. From May 6, 2016 to June 14, 2017, he was Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Administration. In an election to succeed Enda Kenny as party chairman between the end of May and the beginning of June 2017 , which would also have led to his appointment as head of government , he was defeated by Minister of Social Affairs Leo Varadkar . Since the government reshuffle in June 2017, he has been Foreign Minister under the new Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and has also been Deputy Prime Minister ( Tánaiste ) since November 30, 2017 .
