Frances Fitzgerald ( Irish Proinséas Nic Gearailt ; born August 1, 1950 in Croom , County Limerick ) is an Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

Life

Frances Fitzgerald, a social worker after graduating from University College Dublin and the London School of Economics and Political Science, served as Chair of the Council on the Status of Women from 1988 to 1992.

In 1992 she was elected for the first time for the Fine Gael to the deputy (Teachta Dála) in the lower house (Dáil Éireann) and represented in this until 2002 the constituency of Dublin South-East . In 1999, she was also in the constituency Rathmines in the City Council of Dublin (Dublin City Council) selected.

After her electoral defeat, she had to resign from the House of Commons in 2002 and also failed her candidacies in the election to the Senate (Seanad Éireann) and again in the House of Commons election in 2007. In 2007, however, she was elected a member of the Senate and was part of the interest group of the Workforce.

She waived her Senate mandate after she was elected a Member of the House of Commons in the Dublin Mid West constituency on February 25, 2011. On March 9, 2011, the new Prime Minister, Enda Kenny , appointed her Minister for Child and Youth Affairs to the Irish Government . On May 8, 2014, she was appointed Minister of Justice to succeed the resigned Alan Shatter and also serves as Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister). On November 28, 2017, she resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister.
