Ray MacSharry

Raymond "Ray" MacSharry ( Irish Réamann Mac Searraigh ; born April 29, 1938 in Sligo ) is a former Irish politician. He was a member of the House of Commons for the Fianna Fáil from 1969 to 1988 and he was briefly Tánaiste (deputy head of government).

biography

Ray MacSharry was born in County Sligo in 1938. In the Irish election of 1969 he was elected to the Irish House of Commons. In 1979 he became Minister of State for Finance and Public Works. In December of that year he nominated Charles Haughey for the chairmanship of Fianna Fáil. He was later rewarded for this loyalty by becoming Minister of Agriculture. In 1982 he was Tánaiste and Minister of Finance for a short time.

In 1984 MacSharry was elected to the European Parliament . In 1987 he returned to the Irish government and became Treasury Secretary again. In 1989 he was appointed Irish EU Commissioner by Prime Minister Haughey . He was appointed Commissioner for Agriculture by Commission President Jacques Delors in his second commission . He stayed that way until 1993.

His son Marc MacSharry is also active as a Fianna Fáil politician and has been a Senator in the Seanad Éireann since 2002 .
