James "Jim" Gibbons (born August 3, 1924 in County Kilkenny , † December 20, 1997 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

Gibbons was a farmer by profession and was elected for the first time in 1957 as a candidate of Fianna Fáil for member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented there after five subsequent re-elections until his electoral defeat in 1981 the constituency of Carlow-Kilkenny .

In 1965 Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Seán Lemass appointed him Parliamentary Secretary to the Finance Minister. He held this office until Lemass' successor, Prime Minister Jack Lynch , appointed him Secretary of Defense on July 2, 1970 . As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he was then from May 9, 1970 to February 5, 1973 Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries in the Lynch Cabinet.

After the re-electoral victory of Fianna Fáil, Taoiseach Lynch reappointed him as Minister of Agriculture on July 5, 1977 and held this post until Lynch was replaced by his party rival Charles J. Haughey on December 11, 1979.

In 1981 he suffered an electoral defeat and initially resigned from the House of Commons, but was re-elected as a member of the House of Commons in March 1982 and again represented the constituency of Carlow-Kilkenny until November 1982 . However, after he suffered another election defeat in the general election in November 1982, he left the Dáil Éireann and withdrew from politics.

His uncle Seán Gibbons was a representative of the Fianna Fáil also Teachta Dála and a member of the Seanad Éireann , while his sons Jim Gibbons, Jr. and Martin Gibbons were members of the Senate and the House of Commons for the Progressive Democrats .
