Willie O'Dea ( Irish Liam Ó Deaghaidh , born November 1, 1952 in Limerick ) is an Irish politician and was Minister of Defense of the Republic of Ireland from 2004 to 2010 .

O'Dea attended the Patrician Brothers College in Ballyfin , County Laois , studied law at University College Dublin and later at King's Inns . In February 1982, the former barrister O'Dea was first elected to the Dáil Éireann and was able to defend his seat as Teachta Dála in all subsequent elections. Before O'Dea became Secretary of Defense on September 29, 2004, he had held the post of Minister of State several times . He was Minister of State in the Ministry of Justice from 1992 to 1994 and in the Ministry of Education from 1997 to 2002, and then again in the Ministry of Justice from 2002 until he was appointed Minister of Defense in 2004. After his re-election to the Dáil Éireann in 2007, he also held the position in the new government Post of Defense Minister. In February 2010, O'Dea had to resign as minister after he was convicted of false testimony.

O'Dea is married. He writes regularly for the Sunday Independent and occasionally for other national newspapers.
