Michael Hilliard

Michael Hilliard (born March 11, 1903 , † January 1, 1982 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

Hilliard, who was a cattle dealer by profession, began his national political career as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in 1943 with the election to the Deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented there first until 1948 the constituency of Meath-Westmeath and then until 1973 Interests of Meath .

In February 1958 Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Éamon de Valera appointed him Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry and Trade.

In the subsequent government of Prime Minister Seán Lemass , he was first Minister for Post and Telegraphy on June 23, 1959. During his tenure, Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) was founded on June 1, 1960, and its television program began on New Year's Eve 1961 .

As part of a cabinet reshuffle, Lemass appointed him Secretary of Defense on April 21, 1965 . He also held this office in the subsequent government of Taoiseach Jack Lynch until July 2, 1969.

In 1973 he suffered a defeat in the general election and left the Dáil. Until then, he was also a member of the first delegation in the European Parliament for a short time after Ireland joined the European Communities in 1973 and thus practically a member of the European Parliament .

His son Colm Hilliard was also a member of the House of Commons for several years.
