Patrick Lalor

Patrick "Paddy" Joseph Lalor ( Irish Pádraig Ó Leathlobhair , born July 21, 1926 , † July 29, 2016 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

Lalor, who was a businessman by profession , began his national political career as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in 1961 when he was first elected Member of the House of Commons ( Teachta Dála ) ( Dáil Éireann ), in which, after four re-elections, he defended the interests of the constituency Laoighis-Offaly represented.

In 1965 he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Seán Lemass , taking on his first government office. In the subsequent government of Prime Minister Jack Lynch he was on November 10, 1966 Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport and Energy and the Minister of Post and Telegraphy.

Subsequently, Prime Minister Lynch appointed him Minister of Post and Telegraphy on July 2, 1969. As part of a government reshuffle, he then became Minister of Industry and Trade in the Lynch cabinet and held this position until the end of his term on March 14, 1973.

After the re-electoral victory of Fianna Fáil, he was appointed on July 5, 1977 by Prime Minister Lynch as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense. After the reorganization of government offices, which led to the creation of the positions of ministers of state instead of parliamentary secretaries, he was last from January 1, 1978 to July 1, 1979 Minister of State at the Prime Minister and in the Ministry of Defense.

He was then elected a member of the 1st European Parliament in 1979 and, after being re-elected in 1984 and 1989, was also a member of the second and third electoral periods until 1994.

In 1981, because of his membership in the European Parliament, he renounced another candidacy for the lower house.

Paddy Lalor was also active for many years Hurling poker players and won with his team Laois GAA 1949 both the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship and with the team of Abbyleix GAA the Laois Senior Hurling Championship .
