Richard Bruton ( Irish Risteárd de Briotún , born March 15, 1953 in Dublin ) is an Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

biography

Bruton studied after school economics and worked as after graduation economist working in the public service.

He began his political career as a candidate in 1981 when he was elected member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), in which he represented the agricultural group until 1982. He was then elected Member of Parliament ( Teachta Dála ) for the first time in 1982 and has since represented the constituency of Dublin North Central after seven re-elections .

On September 23, 1986 he was appointed by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Garret FitzGerald as Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry and Trade and thus took over his first government office as "Junior Minister" until the end of FitzGerald's tenure on March 10, 1987.

Following Fine Gael's renewed electoral victory, he was appointed Minister for Enterprise and Employment by his brother, Prime Minister John Bruton , on December 15, 1994 and held that post until the end of Bruton's tenure on June 26, 1997.

After the disastrous performance of the Fine Gael in the general election in 2002 and the resignation of party chairman Michael Noonan , he ran for his successor, but was defeated by Enda Kenny . Instead, however, he not only became deputy chairman of the Fine Gael, but also spokesman for the opposition on financial policy . As part of a reorganization of the party leadership, he lost these offices on June 14, 2010, but was appointed by party chairman Enda Kenny as spokesman for the opposition for business, jobs and economic planning.

From March 9, 2011 to 2016, he was Bruton again as Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation . He has been Minister for Education and Skills since May 6, 2016 .
