Charlie McCreevy [ ˈtʃɑɹli məˈkɹiːvi ] ( Irish Cathal Mac Riabhaigh , born September 30, 1949 in Sallins , County Kildare , Ireland ) is an Irish politician and former European Commissioner for the internal market and the services sector.

He is a member of the Fianna Fáil party and has represented the constituency of Kildare and Kildare North in the lower house of the Irish Parliament ( Dáil Éireann ) since 1977 . McCreevy became Minister of Social Affairs of Ireland in February 1992 and Minister of Commerce and Tourism in January of the following year (until December 1994). Between 1995 and 1997 he was his party's financial spokesman.

From June 1997 to September 2004 McCreevy was Finance Minister under Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Bertie Ahern in the coalition government of the Fianna Fáil with the liberal Progressive Democrats , and continued to be a member of the ECOFIN Council, which he chaired during the Irish EU Council Presidency.

From 2004 to 2010 he was a member of the EU Commission responsible for the internal market and services .
