Eileen Desmond

Eileen Desmond (birth name: Harrington ) (born December 29, 1932 in Kinsale , County Cork , † January 6, 2005 ) was an Irish politician of the Irish Labor Party .

biography

Eileen Desmond, who was employed in the public service, began her political career as a candidate for the Irish Labor Party in a by-election ( By-election ) on March 10, 1965 with the election of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ), where she succeeded her late husband Dan Desmond represented the constituency of Cork Mid until 1969 . After she suffered an election defeat in 1969 and left the House of Commons, she became a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) and was there until 1973 representative of the industry and finance group. In 1973 she was re-elected to the Dáil Éireann, where she first represented the constituency of Cork Mid until 1981 and then until 1987 of the constituency of Cork South-Central .

At the same time she was a member of the 1st European Parliament between 1979 and 1981 .

After the formation of a coalition government of Fine Gael and Labor Party, she was appointed Minister of Health and Minister of Social Welfare by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Garret FitzGerald on June 30, 1981 . She held these offices until the end of the coalition government on March 9, 1982.

In 1987 she refused to run again for the House of Commons and left the Dáil Éireann.
