Brendan Daly

Brendan Daly ( Irish Breandán Ó Dálaigh , born February 2, 1940 in Cooraclare near Kilrush , County Clare ) is an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil and former minister.

biography

His political career began Daly, who was originally an employee of the civil service, 1973 as a candidate of Fianna Fáil with the first election to the deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he initially represented the constituency of Clare until December 1992 . Between March 1980 and June 1981 he was Minister of State at the Minister of Labor. Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Charles J. Haughey then appointed him from March to December 1982 as Minister for Fisheries and Forestry in his second cabinet.

In Haughey's third cabinet, he was Minister of the Navy from March 1987 to July 1989. Subsequently, between July 1989 and February 1991 he was Minister of State with the Prime Minister and at the same time Minister of State with the Minister of Finance. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, Prime Minister Haughey then appointed him on February 5, 1991, first Minister of Defense and then, as part of another government reshuffle, on November 14, 1991, Minister for Social Welfare.

Haughey's successor as Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds , finally appointed Daly Minister of State to the Foreign Secretary on February 13, 1992 . He held this office until January 12, 1993. After losing his mandate, he was nominated on December 2, 1992 by the Prime Minister for a seat in the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), which he held until 1997, where he represented the group for agriculture.

In 1997 he was re-elected as a member of the House of Commons for the Clare constituency. During the 28th legislative period (28th Dáil), he was also Deputy Chairman of the Public Enterprise and Transport Committee between December 1997 and 2002. In 2002 he left the House of Commons again and again belonged to the Senate between 2002 and 2007, this time representing the group of employees.
