Thomas J. Fitzpatrick (Fine Gael)

Thomas "Tom" J. Fitzpatrick ( Irish Tomás Mac Giolla Phádraig , born February 14, 1918 in Scotshouse , County Monaghan , † October 2, 2006 ) was an Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

biography

Fitzpatrick initially graduated in law and was then as a consulting lawyer ( Solicitor active).

He began his political career in 1961 when he was first elected a member of the Seanad Éireann as a candidate for the Fine Gael . There he belonged to the administration group until 1965 . Subsequently, he was a deputy ( Member of Dáil Éireann ) of Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish parliament , elected and took it 24 years to 1989, the interests of the constituency Cavan and then from 1977 for the constituency of Cavan-Monaghan .

On March 14, 1973 Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave appointed him Minister for Land in his cabinet. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he was then from December 1976 until the end of Cosgrave's term on May 25, 1977 Minister of Transport and Energy. Between June 1981 and March 1982 he was also Minister of Fisheries and Forestry in the government of Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald .

After the election to the 24th Dáil Éireann, he succeeded John O'Connell on February 14, 1982 new chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the Dáil. He held this office until March 9, 1987, when he was replaced by Seán Treacy in this office. In 1989 he resigned from the Dáil Éireann after he had previously waived a new candidacy.
