John Etchingham

John (Seán) Etchingham ( Irish : Seán Eichingeam ; * unknown; † April 23, 1923 ) was an Irish politician of the Sinn Féin .

biography

Etchingham, who worked as a journalist , was involved in the independence movement at an early stage and was not only a member of the Sinn Féin, but also the Irish Volunteers , Conradh na Gaeilge and the Irish Republican Brotherhood and took an active part in the Easter Rising in 1916 .

In the elections to the House of Commons ( House of Commons ), he was a deputy in 1918, representing the constituency of East Wicklow selected. In 1919, as a candidate for Sinn Féin, he was elected MP ( Teachta Dála ) of the First House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ). There he first represented the constituency of Wicklow East and then from 1921 to 1922 Wexford .

During this time he was initially from June 29, 1920 to August 26, 1921 Director of Fisheries. He was then Minister for Fisheries from August 26, 1921 to January 9, 1922, but was not a member of the cabinet as such.

In the general election in 1922 he suffered a defeat and left the Dáil. During the Irish Civil War he was one of the opponents of this treaty ( Anti-Treaty ) within the Sinn Féin, which was split due to the Anglo-Irish Treaty . As such, he was arrested a little later and died while in detention due to his poor health.
