Seán Flanagan

Seán Flanagan ( Irish Seán Ó Flannagáin , born January 26, 1922 in Ballyhaunis , County Mayo , † February 5, 1993 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

After attending school he studied law and worked as a solicitor after completing his studies . He began his national political career as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in 1951 with the first election to the deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ), in which he, after six subsequent re-elections until 1969, the interests of the constituency of Mayo South and then until 1977 of Mayo East represented.

In April 1965 he was first appointed by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Seán Lemass as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Industry and Trade and thus took over his first government office.

After Lemass' successor Jack Lynch took office , he was appointed Minister of Health on July 13, 1966. After a government reshuffle, he was then from July 2, 1969 until the end of Lynch's tenure on July 2, 1973 Minister of Lands.

After he suffered a defeat in the 1977 general election, he resigned from the lower house and initially withdrew from active politics. However, he was elected a member of the 1st European Parliament in 1979 and was a member of the European Parliament for the second electoral term until 1989.
