biography

After completing his studies, he worked as a teacher at a secondary school and began his national political career as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil in 1982 with the first election as a deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ), in which he initially represented the interests of the constituency Galway West represented.

After the Fianna Fáil electoral victory, he was appointed Minister of State for Youth and Sport in the Ministry of Education on March 12, 1987 by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Charles J. Haughey, taking on his first government office as "Junior Minister". After a cabinet reshuffle, he was then Minister of State in the Ministry of Education from July 19, 1989 until the end of Haughey's term of office on February 11, 1992, and also Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Transport and Communication from September 26, 1989 to February 11, 1992 and as such responsible for tourism.

After he resigned from the House of Commons in 1992, he was a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) between 1993 and 1997 , where he represented the working class. In 1997 he was re-elected as a member of the House of Commons and, after two re-elections, has since again represented Galway West's constituency .

Prime Minister Bertie Ahern also appointed him Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Children after the Fianna Fáil's election victory on July 8, 1997. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was Minister for Navy and Natural Resources from January 27, 2000 to June 6, 2002 and was thus also a member of Ahern's cabinet.

After the general election in 2002, however, he left the cabinet again and was only considered for a post as "junior minister" by Bertie Ahern when the government was formed on June 18, 2002 as Minister of State for Enterprise, Trade and Employment. He held this office until June 14, 2007. Most recently, Fahey was also Minister of State in the Ministry of Justice, Equality and Judicial Reform from September 29, 2004 to June 14, 2007.
